Before, we looked at the Canon G9 price to see what a high end point and shoot can go for. Today, we are looking at the Nikon D40 price to see what a low end digital SLR will go for.
Now, don't get me wrong, the D40 is great, especially for a cheap digital camera. You get the typical DX sized SLR sensor, the ability to use interchangeable lenses, all in a high quality yet compact body. The D40 really is a great value for those looking to break into the SLR market.
Looking towards the eBay marketplace, we see that some great values can be had there, particularly with respect to package deals on the D40.
In contrast to cameras such as the G9, the Nikon D40 provides an interesting example of how close the new level really is. These cameras are almost the same price, when one would appear to have many more features than the other. Of course, there are obvious differences in size and weight, but really, it seems that the D40 would be hard to competer with in this pricepoint. Despite the cheap Nikon D40 price, many may overlook it because of its low resolution vs. the G9. This, to me, is more than made up for buy the quality of the pixels, but not everyone will see things this way. Here is a video review to get you an idea of what the D40 offers for the price.
In the future, I expect the price of the D40 to fall even further, making its point and shoot competitors really having to scramble. The digital photography world is changing fast, and the Nikon D40 price is but one metric we can use to track this change.

what a flamer...this article talks about the new lower prices on the d-40 and shows recent examples of these low prices from Ebay. Problem is, these are auctions for accessories, not the camera.
I've fixed the eBay widget to improve the relevancy of the results. Thanks for your feedback.
